On September 15th, German Energy Agency (dena) organized Expert Exchange on Green Transition Obstacles in the Western Balkans Region, and invited co-founders of RES Foundation, Jasminka Young and Aleksandar Macura, to contribute with their insights and expertise.

The energy transition is an opportunity for the Western Balkan (WB) to achieve the strategic goals of EU integration, support economic growth, and tackle climate change. The WB have committed to this approach in various national strategic documents and plans. With the WB project, the German Energy Agency supports the commitment of the German government to advance the process of energy transition in the WB and to find the best solutions for an accelerated and just energy transition in line with the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.

Together with leading regional energy and climate experts, the dena Kick-Off workshop aimed to identify and discuss main challenges for green transition in the WB6, which will also serve as focus areas of the project and future collaboration. In addition, the workshop aims to establish a platform of experts that will be involved in the project.

The discussion covered topics such as the core obstacles for sustainable energy transition, priority first-steps in order to overcome the main obstacles, formats or projects of cross-border cooperation on the bilateral and local/regional level that could make a contribution. Challenges were discussed, but also great opportunities that sustainable energy can bring the region.
